Aerial Shots – Chudleigh Then & Now
Aerial Shots
CHG has a collection¹ of aerial pictures of Chudleigh, many taken in 1967. Click on a thumbnail to see a larger version. You can move to previous or next or run a slideshow.
We've managed to identify most of the subjects, but there are a few isolated properties that we haven't – these are labelled "Not Known". If you can help us to identify these houses (probably farms), please get in touch via the Contact page.
¹ Undated images are from 1967 originals held by Mr Frank Chessum,
scanned with kind permission.
The original image labelled "Colomb" is held by Mrs Frances Colomb,
scanned with kind permission. The exact date is unknown, but from known
changes, we believe it to have been taken most likely sometime between 1980
& 1985.
Chudleigh Then & Now
GHG and the Chudleigh Camera Club (CCC) combined forces to mount an exhibition in the church during 2016's Chudfest Week. Entitled Chudleigh Then & Now, CHG selected over 60 old photos of Chudleigh from the archives² – ranging from 1857 to the 1989 – and challenged CCC to take a modern picture of the self-same view point. While many scenes have barely changed in the last 100 years, several buildings have been demolished and re-built which took some detective work for the modern photographer to stand in the exact same place in 2016! Pairs of photos are arranged (mostly) in year order of the original, where known (or our best guess)³. Click on a thumbnail to see a larger version – try to spot what's different and what has barely changed! You can move to previous or next or run a slideshow.
² Old photos from the collections of the History Group, Amenity Society,
Chris Webb and Doug Hellier Laing. New photos by Alan Winn, Simon
Farrimond, Dave Offiler and the Cricket Club.
³ Those with unknown dates are assigned '19xx'.
